Ethnographic Research into Medical Devices

Ethnographic research is quite simply the best methodology for establishing a holistic understanding of:

  • ill-met and even unconscious needs
  • ideas for improved product design
  • new areas for product development within complementary product sectors
During a CMR Context Enquiry individual clinicians and nurses are accompanied by a CMR researcher and observer from our client manufacturer or design company for a number of days, to understand:
  • what clinicians do in live situations and why?
  • what is the real environment in which clinical tasks are performed?
  • what are the actual problems clinicians encounter?
  • what are the key frustrations with existing devices and equipment?
The recordings and notes from the interviews produce a large amount of data encompassing processes and techniques, ill-met, unmet and unconscious needs. All the data and observations gathered go into a “bag of ideas” and are analysed using a process of Affinity Diagramming to enable key new breakthrough concepts to emerge
